I love this place! During the school year I would always pop in for a Scotch-a-roo! The staff is very friendly and personable, I feel comfortable going to Z'Mariks with a big group or just by myself!

This place is awesome, noodle or rice bowls made to your liking and bottled local beer to boot. Also super affordable, for $15 I had 2 beers and a large bowl of noodles w/chicken. The food exceeded my expectations, chicken freshly grilled, herbs nice and chilled, noodles perfectly cooked. So good I just signed up with yelp to leave this review, a special thanks to yelp for helping me find this place!!!

Pretty average noodle place that is basically a local version of Noodles and Company. Not a lot of flavor.

Basic, reliable, and mostly the same from time to time. Great for a warm lunch on a cold day. Had marinara with chicken and broccoli last night, very nice.

For my first impression, I liked Z'mariks better than other similar restaurants I've been too. The atmosphere is the same as a Noodles & Company (fast-food like, plain, small eating area) but the pasta I had was really good. I had Pesto Mac and added feta and chicken to it. I think it cost around $9 but it was easily enough for 2 meals, so I guess $4.50 a meal..not too shabby. It was really tasty..if I were going to complain about anything it'd be that there was a bit too much sauce. I think this is 'cause they put the mac and cheese sauce on it and then put pesto sauce on it. But oh well, not a big deal. Anyway, I'd go back. Seems like it'd be a good place to grab lunch on the go. If it were open later, it'd also be good late-night food.

Might be the new go-to cheap lunch in Iowa City. Can't blame Mesa for bumping their prices up, but for less than the $7 you'd spend at Mesa, you can get a nice pile of noodles at Z'mariks. I'm partial to the udon, especially as it is something that I'm unlikely to try to make at home.

I've been coming to this place since high school, but as you get older you really just want a chill place to eat. When I came in there was a lot of younger kids. The place is kind of a small joint, so they were practically yelling at each other. Other than that it was quiet once they left. The thing I love the most about this place is the portions. They are incredibly large and I always have left overs. The chicken was a little bland though. I had the alfredo, but the mac and cheese is always good here.

A lot of different options including tofu. It was delicious and inexpensive. Plus, they have wifi!

Fast friendly a multitude of options just don't go at noon unless you have lots of time to wait for a table. But the wait is worth it.

Noodly noodly NOODLES! I was sad there wasn't a Noodles & Company in Iowa City - I ate there once or twice a week at minimum before I moved to town. I went into Z'mariks today hoping for something to help my noodle bowl cravings. The bowl I chose was so much better than Noodles & Co.! I had penne pasta w/ a light garlic white wine cream sauce, spinach, mushrooms, red onion, tomato. The pasta was perfectly al dente and had a generous amount of Romano cheese grated on top. The killer was that they grated cheese IN the dish too so it got all gooey melty tasty. I really hate when the cheese is only on top and you eat it in the first few bites. You can get any of their bowls with chicken, shrimp, or tofu. They also have rice bowls and salads. It's a loud place if it's full and they were very full at noon on a Sunday but the turnover rate of the tables seemed to go pretty quickly. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table, careful the first bite will be really hot!

If a man gave me the opportunity to spend a night of wonderful, consensual passion with Ryan Gosling, or to have a bowl of the Buffalo Chicken Mac with meatballs here, I'd probably choose the Buffalo Chicken Mac. In fact, I'd choose the Buffalo Chicken Mac 10 out of 10 awkward encounters with strangers involving noodle restaurants and Ryan Gosling.

Your comfort food destination. Restaurant layout is simple and clean, and the cashiers/servers are kind. Prices are usually less than $10 so it does not make a huge dent in your pocket. They have daily specials (one is $4 mac and cheese). Every time I go I get the garlic mac which has chicken, red onions, garlic, and cheese. It is extremely rich but it is just what I need to feel better about life. Their pesto is also very good. The menu is more interesting than Noodles and co so make sure to check it out.

I just love this place. I'm an IC native and would choose this place over "Noodles" crap any day! Alex, my normal cashier, is just awesome. He's so friendly and personable, really wants to make sure you are enjoying your food and time there. The staff is prompt at taking orders and getting your food out to you. It's so affordable, except to add in protein, and the portions are huge! Def get your money's worth. My favorites are the teriyaki rice bowl and the basil pesto

Consistently is really the story about this place. The food is good (you get more and better food for less money than the noodles chain in the mall), but to me that's not the point. Somehow, you can always expect more or less the same amount of food, and the same quality, each and every time you come here. Maybe only once or twice out of literally dozens of times coming here have I gotten something that was, say, under-sauced or had not enough pasta. The staff is well trained and efficient, and I suspect the same discipline is imparted to their cooks. I will say I've never dealt with their take out or had any of their non-pasta dishes, however. Not only do you not have to worry about not getting good food, but the whole process is streamlined to a tee. The menu has enough options but not too many, and there's just enough customization to have some freedom as a customer, but not too much as to be unnecessarily confusing or cumbersome (my main beef with Chipotle/Heirloom type restaurants)--thus you don't run into the risk of getting stuck behind someone indecisive or clueless. They bring the food to your table and you can leave your dish for them to clean up (and they always wait until after you leave your table, so you don't have to worry about them interrupting your meal on accident). They also have free local magazines and newspapers which is nice. It's all these subtleties that makes this place great. It's just easy and it basically never changes.

This place is pretty good. Way better than Noodles N Company for sure. I get the Spicy Peanut noodle and switch out the noodles for Udon noodles. However on my last trip there, my order to go had mushrooms in it. Why? I have no clue. I'd prefer paying for what I ordered, esp because this is dangerous food preparation that would really hurt someone with an allergy.

  • Justin W.

Nice and clean inside like other noodle places. And there service was friendly and prompt, at least on a slow day. I agree with the spicy peanut being really tasty. I disagree with saying it needs more sauce, I think it's just right. I added shrimp, which was good, although they didn't exactly load it up. All-in-all it was pretty good. I don't think I'll ever crave it, but I would definitely not hesitate to go back to mix it up a little bit.

As a self-proclaimed Mac n Cheese connoisseur, Z'Mariks gets two thumbs up from me. The worst part about this place was having to choose between the 4 varieties of mac n cheese! I ended up going with the buffalo chicken mac and was pretty pleased. Very cheesy and just the right amount of buffalo made it hard to resist. Sadly I don't think I'll be back in Iowa City anytime soon, but if you are traveling through or just looking for a quick/cheap/delicious meal...this is the place!

If you get hankering for some really tasty pasta without wanting to spend $15-$18 on a dish in a less casual atmosphere, Z'Mariks is the answer. Located in the heart of downtown Iowa City, this spot offers delicious pasta and salad options with extras available to add to your liking. Not only is it affordable, but the service was fantastic (I had a gentleman with shorter hair and glasses who was super helpful) and the atmosphere was mad chill. Next time you're too lazy to chef up some Mac n' Cheese - let the rad crew over at Z'Mariks do it for you.

Meh. It's okay noodle and rice dishes at tolerable prices. I come here for lunch when I need a fast meal that will last me a few hours. Nothing on the menu is stunning. I guess I'd describe the food as "consistent." I'd to need a quick lunch that will fill you up for under $10, this is a decent option. If you want something more interesting, go elsewhere.

Been to Z'maricks about 5 times and every dish that I've tried has been fantastic. If you have never tried this place you owe it to yourself to give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Fantastic restaurant.

I've been coming here for years and whenever I'm back in town to visit I make time to stop. They now have 2 different bowl sizes which is great when you don't feel like going into a food coma. Small size bowls are more than sufficient for anyone to fill up. My favorite dishes: Alfredo with chicken and the Mac n cheese (which is $4 on Mondays!) The restaurant is always clean, service is quick, if you come at busy times you might have to work to find a place to sit!

Udon noodle bowl didn't turn out at all like I expected it too. Not sure if it tasted the same when I took a bite from my friend's bowl last time, but it wasn't too great in my opinion and I don't think I'll be getting it again. Way too saucy, too sweet, and definitely had the American taste to this "Asian" dish.

The best noodle option in Iowa City. Great food and fair prices. Much fresher and more authentic than Noodles and Company.

Great selection, excellent taste. I have had several dishes here, all noodle dishes, and they've all been great. My favorite is the spicy peanut. I think this is one of the best places in the area to eat both lunch and dinner.

Pasta Pasta Noodles Noodles -- Fresh made-to-order bowls (noodles, rice, soup, salads) In the heart of downtown IC. So keep in mind if students are in session, as parking could be hard to find, but there are several parking ramps near by as well. Bowls under $6 and can add grilled chicken or shrimp for $2 and tofo for $1.60 Kidz Bowlz for $3.79 Great lunch option for downtown, made pretty quick, fresh ingredients, lots of options. I usually get the Spicy Peanut (add/Chicken for dinner). I also like the Krith-a-raki with orzo noodles (hard to get some places). Friendly staff each time I've been in there. Great option for vegetarians/vegans too. Also have whole-grain pasta and rice options. BTW it's "zee-mare-icks" psst... the to-go bowls make for great lunch the next day for the Z'left-overs

I wasn't expecting much of Iowa City cuisine, but this seemed like a local favorite so I figured it was worth a try. I had the mac and cheese with buffalo shrimp and it was fantastic. Obviously not the healthiest choice on the menu but I was licking the bowl. M had a combo with a Greek salad and a Mediterranean noodle dish and wasn't as happy-- his was a little bland and he kept sneaking bites of mine. The format is a step above food court takeout but not full-service, which is nice for a quick lunch. Order at the counter, grab a number, 5 minutes later you have food.

I had forgotten about how good this place was since I'm not usually in town during lunch, but we came here in between meetings and rediscovered the freshness of the food and the good lunch vibe that i haven't had for so long. Lots of students and quick service. For under $6 you can get a decent bowl of noodles or rice, and for another $2 you can add meats. If youre a big eater like me, you'll think the portions are smaller but you'll realize in the end that its the proper size for a healthy diet.

After giving Z'Mariks a middling rating and review, I am bumping up my rating to four stars! Why? Because they have some low calorie options that are satisfying and taste good. For example, the "pick 2" option where you get a small bowl of noodles and a small salad. I can get a meal under 500 calories. I like the Pesto and Ceasar Salad combo. I might also note that when ordering the Spicy Peanut Noodle they have been a bit more generous with the vegetables. As always, the service and staff have been great ... always quick, friendly and helpful.

Z'mariks was a weekly stop for me during my six years living in Iowa City. Much tastier and more options than a Noodles & Company. The Mac and Cheese is delicious and holds its own compared to any other. I am a big fan of the fettucini alfredo and the lemon saute. My friend always ordered the Udon and my husband liked the Thai bowl. To add extras to the bowl (chicken, shrimp) was overpriced in my opinion, but the bowls are filling enough you don't really need the extra protein. It's a great place to stop in and eat when you don't want to rush through fast food but don't have time for a full service restaurant. (You order at the counter, they bring it out to you). Reasonable prices and fast service.

Screw these low reviews. These people are NUTS! The food here is made to order, delicious, and cheap! It's a great place to come for lunch, snacktime, dinner, or whatever. I don't know what these other people are looking for from a NOODLE HOUSE, but this totally exceeds my expectations. Believe me, there are far worse noodle places out there, and this ain't one of em.

These guys give Noodles and Company a real run for the money. Given the choice of N & C or Z's I would most definitely go for Z'Mariks. Their menu of various pasta and rice dishes is extensive and the option for substitutions is excellent for changing up your usual dish. I recommend asking for the pesto extra spicy and with mushrooms. If you get the Spicy Peanut, get extra sauce and add snap peas and chicken. Everything here is excellent and I love the sriracha hot sauce on the tables. A bit pricey for food but you get a huge serving... more than you really need but why not indulge on a great carbohydrate dish- Go run after and feel good about yourself. Also offer a punch card so if you eat there enough you get a free bowl. Also, Mac N Cheese is the god send of hangover cures!

This is a decent cheap noodle/rice place. I like the concept and I feel it is fairly well executed. It is not phenomenal, but its totally worth the price and a decent meal.

Great lunch spot or for a meal with kids. Z'marik's food is consistently delicious. I personally prefer their udon noodles (with a little chili-garlic sauce to kick it up a bit) but my wife swears by their krit-a-raki. Both our boys (1 & 3) agree with mom on the Krith-a-raki.

Always a great spot and very family friendly. The food comes quickly but it's not pre-made

This is the best place in downtown Iowa City to grab lunch. You can call in and place an order in advance, get food to go, or eat there. Eating there can get a bit loud, but the food is totally worth it. The raveoletti soup is the best thing on the menu!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
